How to Calculate Packaging Dimensions
What are Packaging Dimensions?
Packaging dimensions are the measurements used to describe the size of packaging within Pimento.
These dimensions help determine:
Whether products fit inside packaging
Shipping carrier compatibility
Shipment size calculations
Packaging suitability
Packaging dimensions are usually entered as:
Length
Width
Height
All dimensions should be measured in millimetres.
Internal Dimensions
Internal dimensions refer to the usable space inside the packaging.
This is the actual area available for products.
When measuring internal dimensions, measure the inside length, width and height of the packaging.
Internal dimensions are important because they determine whether products can physically fit inside the package.
External Dimensions
External dimensions refer to the outside measurements of the packaging.
These measurements represent the final package size during shipping.
Shipping carriers may use external dimensions to:
Calculate shipping costs
Apply carrier limits
Determine available shipping services
Measuring Boxes
When measuring boxes:
Measure the inside dimensions for internal dimensions
Measure the outside dimensions for external dimensions
Internal dimensions are usually slightly smaller because the packaging material itself has thickness.
Measuring Mailer Bags
For mailer bags:
Internal dimensions should only include the usable packing space
Do not include sealed edges or adhesive strips
External dimensions should include the full outside size of the bag
Measuring Parcels
For parcels, measurements should reflect the final packed package size.
This means measuring the package as it would realistically appear once sealed and ready for shipment.
Why Accurate Dimensions Matter
Accurate dimensions are important because incorrect measurements can cause fulfilment and shipping problems.
Incorrect dimensions may lead to:
Products not fitting inside packaging
Incorrect packaging selection
Carrier restrictions
Incorrect shipping costs
Shipment delays
