Shopify Locations Overview
What are Shopify Locations?
Shopify Locations allow brands to manage inventory and fulfil orders from multiple physical locations.
A location could represent:
A warehouse
A retail store
A fulfilment partner
A distribution centre
A third-party logistics provider (3PL)
Each location can hold its own inventory and fulfil its own orders.
This allows brands to control where products are shipped from and helps Shopify determine the most appropriate fulfilment location for each order.
Why are Shopify Locations Important?
Shopify Locations help brands manage stock across multiple fulfilment points.
Rather than all orders being fulfilled from a single warehouse, Shopify can distribute orders based on inventory availability and fulfilment rules.
This is particularly useful when:
Using multiple warehouses
Selling internationally
Working with fulfilment partners such as Pimento
Managing stock across stores and warehouses
Without correctly configured locations, orders may be assigned to the wrong warehouse or fail to route as expected.
How Pimento Uses Shopify Locations
When a Shopify store is connected to Pimento, Shopify Locations are used to determine which orders should be downloaded.
Pimento will only download orders assigned to the Shopify Location selected within the Shopify integration settings.
This means:
Orders assigned to the Pimento location will download into Pimento
Orders assigned to other locations will remain outside of Pimento
Shopify remains responsible for deciding which location receives the order
Common Use Cases
Using Pimento for International Orders
A brand may fulfil UK orders internally while using Pimento for international orders.
In this setup:
UK orders are assigned to the brand’s warehouse location
International orders are assigned to the Pimento location
Only the international orders would download into Pimento.
Multiple Warehouses
Some brands operate multiple warehouses.
Shopify Locations allow orders to be split between warehouses depending on stock availability or fulfilment rules.
Retail and Warehouse Fulfilment
A business may hold inventory in both stores and warehouses.
Shopify can determine which location should fulfil an order based on inventory availability and fulfilment priority.
Troubleshooting Shopify Locations
If orders are not downloading into Pimento:
Confirm the correct Shopify Location has been selected in Pimento
Verify the Shopify Location is active
Check the order has been assigned to the correct location within Shopify
Confirm inventory is available at the location if required by Shopify’s routing rules
If a location does not appear in Pimento, it may not yet be active within Shopify.
Important Notes
Shopify Locations are managed entirely within Shopify.
Pimento cannot control which location an order is assigned to.
Pimento only downloads orders assigned to the selected Shopify Location.
Inventory availability can affect how Shopify routes orders between locations.
Location routing rules are configured within Shopify, not Pimento.
FAQs
Can I have more than one Shopify Location?
Yes. Shopify supports multiple locations depending on your Shopify plan and configuration.
Can Pimento fulfil orders from multiple Shopify Locations?
Pimento downloads orders from the Shopify Location selected within the integration settings. Additional configuration may be required if multiple fulfilment locations are being used.
Why isn’t my location appearing in Pimento?
Check that the location is active within Shopify and that the Shopify integration has been refreshed.
Does Pimento decide which location receives an order?
No. Shopify determines the fulfilment location before the order is downloaded into Pimento.
Can I use Shopify Locations to separate UK and International orders?
Yes. Many brands use separate locations to route domestic and international orders to different fulfilment providers.
